About Literacy Volunteers of East Bay
Literacy Volunteers of East Bay (LVEB) provides free, confidential, one-to-one tutoring for
adults. We tutor people working on basic reading and writing skills as well as those
preparing for their GED exams. We also work with ESL (English as a Second Language)
students who want to learn to speak English, acquire survival skills, and prepare for their
citizenship exam.
Literacy Volunteers of East Bay consists of roughly 100 volunteers, an 11-member Board
of Directors and one administrative director. We serve over 100 learners each year
through our well-trained tutors and group class leaders. Tutors must complete a 16-hour
training program and proceed with support from our literacy specialist.
Most students are tutored individually in public spaces (such as their local library). We
also provide group classes at LVEB and can organize groups for local businesses,
churches or other organizations who have a group that needs services.
We provide services and/or referrals to any adult learner (over 18 years of age) who is
willing to travel to our program area of Bristol, Warren, Barrington, and East Providence.
Literacy Volunteers of East Bay is supported by funds from RIDE, the Rhode Island
Department of Education, local and state government and money generated from an
annual campaign and generous donations from local citizens and business.
