Become a Student!

Congratulations on taking the first step.
At Literacy Volunteers, we provide students with free and confidential help with reading,
writing or English needs. Every year, we work with hundreds of adults to achieve their
goals. If you are here because you'd like to become a student or know someone who is
interested, you are taking the first step towards improving life skills, and we're glad that we
can help!

Who our students are
Our students are men and women, young and old. Some were born right here in Rhode
Island or other parts of the United States, while others are from countries around the globe.
Our students are single or married; they might be parents or grandparents. Some have
jobs and some are looking for jobs. Others are stay-at-home mothers or fathers, or might
be retired. Some of our students went to school for many years, while others did not have
this opportunity.

Our students come from all walks of life. Whatever one's background, everyone fits in at
Literacy Volunteers! We have programs to meet all kinds of needs.

How it works
As a new student at Literacy Volunteers, everyone receives a free assessment of one's
reading, writing and English language skills. Then, depending on when one has free time to
see a tutor, the new student will have a weekly meeting with one's assigned tutor, usually at
a local library, where lessons will take place. We can find a tutor for a student whether one
is available during the day, or in the evening.

While most of our students live in East Providence, Bristol, Warren, or Barrington, some
students come from other towns.  If you are willing to meet a tutor in the libraries of one of
these towns, we will be happy to serve you. Fill out the
