Becoming a tutor....
LVEB serves the adult communities of Bristol, Warren, Barrington, and East Providence. Tutoring is done at
libraries, coffeehouses or other public spaces in these communities. Most tutors spend a minimum of 90
minutes per week tutoring their student, but this varies widely; we ask that prospective tutors plan to commit to
50 hours of tutoring.
Tutors must attend a series of four workshops before being assigned a student. Though it is possible to make
up a missed session, we hope you will be able to attend the sessions as scheduled (click here for scheduled
training dates).
Our training includes techniques for teaching spoken English as well as for reading. You will leave the training
certified as a tutor, ready to tutor a student, and with the materials and ongoing support needed to help you teach
someone how to read, write and speak English.
Tutors are asked to pay a $25 materials fee, which includes the program binder that is yours to keep and use
after training has ended. If this expense will be a problem for you, please request a waiver; no questions will be
asked.
Enclosed you will find a tutor information packet which should answer most of your questions about volunteering
with LVEB. Please read through it prior to the first session and bring it along. Questions about our policies will
be addressed during training, or you can contact me beforehand.
To register:
-read the tutor information packet
-call or email to register
-fill out and return the tutor intake form and $25 fee (or request for waiver)
-complete a short, free online tutorial. Click here for information on accessing this course. Please
review it prior to the first session and come prepared to discuss materials covered.
Online resources are a vital part of our training and our program; if you are uncomfortable with
computers, please call our office and someone will help you use the website. If you have a disability that
precludes use of a computer, or inhibits access to a public computer, we will offer you a paper copy of
the course. Again, please contact the office for assistance.
-come to training with your tutor info packet, completed intake form and info from online course.
80 volunteers helped us serve 97 people last year. Right now we have about 28 students waiting for tutors and
more calling daily; I hope you will join us in reaching them!
