Online Course Instruction Sheet

Why do I have to complete a course before training?
LVEB has updated our tutor training to spend less class time on lecture, theory and background information.  Our training time will be
spent on hands-on practice that will make you a better tutor.  This way, you can study this information on your own before class begins
and be ready to spend your training session on developing skills.

Is it free?  Will they sell my name if I register for this course?
Verizon Literacy Campus is a free “online school” operated by Verizon.  You will need to register for the course using an email address,
your name and other information.  I have personally used Verizon courses for over 1 year and have never received any junk email or
telemarketing calls at the email and phone numbers I used to register.

I don’t have a computer.  How do you expect me to do this?
Computers can be used for free at your local public library.  You have to sign in to use a computer, and may need to show your library
card.  Most libraries let you use a computer for 30 minute blocks.  You will be able to print, and the staff should be able to help you if you
have questions.
If you have a disability that does not allow you to use or access a computer, the LV-East Bay office will provide you with a paper copy of
the course.  Contact the office for assistance.

I am nervous about using the computer.  Maybe this tutoring thing is not for me.
When students come to seek services, they take a great gamble: they risk embarrassment, ridicule and possible ramifications at work
and at home.  At LV-East Bay we figure that tutors should be able to take a much smaller risk to access a huge variety of free resources
that will help them become better tutors.
If you are worried about this course, or even if you have never touched a computer in your life, call the office and I will personally help you.
Accessing the computer will give you so many materials, the opportunity to meet up with other tutors and talk about teaching, and a
million other things.  Try it!

How to do it:
Using an Internet browser (Explorer, Navigator, etc), go to the address
http://www.vluonline.org/course/index.asp
You will see the list of courses.  The course you need to take is Orientation to Volunteering in Literacy.
If this is your first online course, or if you are not sure about what to do, you may want to start with the course Succeeding as an Online
Learner.
-click on the title of the course
-choose Register at the bottom of the Course Description page.  In the New Student area on the next page, click on Register Now, enter
required information, and create a username and password.
Note: some courses enable students to post information or communicate with each other via email.  You can choose to make your email
address available to other students by choosing Y in the Join the Class Email Distribution List area.  Choosing N will prevent other
students from Emailing you directly but will not impact your ability to post information or send information to other students.
-you will receive a Registration Statement confirming your registration.  Please print your Registration Statement since you will use this
username and password to access your course or register for subsequent courses.  Scroll to the bottom of the Registration Statement
and clock on Begin.
-On the Course Description page, click Begin.

Again:  If you have ANY questions or problems, please
contact Jolene Hamil-Cole at the office.  This online training may seem daunting,
but I believe you will think it is worth the effort.
